New York research on the surname Coyle
Nov 2, 1995
George & Jim,
Had a very nice day in New York yesterday. Actually, any day away from work
is a nice day anymore.
We found several entries in the New York census, however I will tell you right
up front, that none of them are a perfect match. Some will probably raise your
eyebrows a little (especially the one that has Patrick and Mary Coyle living on
a street 4 houses away from a Lynch family from Ireland).
I will provide you with an outline of the data here, but will also put
everything in the mail and post it out this weekend.
Some issues regarding the census in New York for the periods before 1900.
1. The 1890 census was destroyed in a fire somewhere in the
1920's.
2. For those census which have been indexed, there are 2
issues.
A/ Some were indexed ONLY if the household contained a
child that was 10 years old or YOUNGER (don't ask me
what caused them to use that as a criteria).
B/ For any of the 1800's index records, only the head of
the household is listed in the Index.
And just in case it should ever become an area of interest, the 1910 New York
census is not indexed, however they do have a cross reference from a street
address to a specific enumeration district, so if you had an address, you could
go directly to a microfilm and look up everyone living on that street. As I said,
this is not an issue at the present time for Coyle, however it might be sometime
in the future, so file this information away.
The information I provided in item #1 & #2 above, does have an impact on us in one
way. I was unable to look up Edward P. Coyle in the 1870 & 1880 census, as he
wasn't the head of the household.
So now with all of that out of the way, let's continue with what we do have for
you. Some of the data is self eliminating, however I wrote it down, so I figured
I might as well pass it along to you. Someone else on the INTERNET may be able
to do some look ups for us, and we could tell them to ignore certain findings.

[* Jim - records marked with the asterisk were photocopied, and I will post to you
this weekend.]
I ran out of time and was unable to search the 1870 records, but I think there are
a few interesting observations above.
1. Page 502 - Patrick is the right age.
2. Page 502 - Catherine fits as one of his children.
3. Page 502 - Note his occupation [Carman], I think this might fit
the category of "Tram operator" which has been
mentioned regarding Patrick's children.
4. Page 33 - Although several of the names match up (Patrick, Mary,
Catherine, James), all the ages appear to be too old.
5. Page 402 - Patrick appears too young and the children don't match.
6. Page 762 - Patrick & Mary appear to be too old and the children
don't match.
7. Page 809 - Patrick is slightly over age. James is too old, but
the Lynch connection is interesting to say the least.
8. Page 907 - Patrick appears too old, however Mary's age is close,
but child doesn't match.
9. Page 501 - [Not copied] Patrick is right age, but no wife listed
and James is too old.
I wish there was about 10 extra hours in a day, I would surely have gone after the
1870 records to see if the 1860 page 502, Patrick & Mary were also recorded for 1870,
as this one surely looks interesting. I'm tempted to put out a feeler on the roots-l
list server to see if anyone might be willing to help us look up this entry in the
1870 census.
I'm sure Dorothy and I will be going back to N.Y. soon, as we still have things we
need to look up, however our plans are to go after birth, marriage & death records
in a different part of New York. This could turn out to be a good place for some Coyle
research. Might be able to look up a marriage record for the above Patrick and a birth
record for their daughter Catherine. I could also look up the Edward P. Coyle who was
born in 1869. Wouldn't it be nice to find that the page 502 Patrick Coyle is also the
father of Edward P. and James Coyle in the 1870 census.
As you can see, I'm partial to taking flights of fancy from time to time. It's part of
my Irish propensity towards story telling...speaking of which, after that wonderful
buildup you provided detailing the search for the errant battery, I'm somewhat taken
back that an O'Reilly (descendant of Princes) would be thwarted in the battle of man
against machine.
And while on the subject of machines, I'm seriously thinking of picking up a nice little
antenna tuner and a vertical that I can connect up to my Xcvr and get back on the air
again. I'm starting to really miss my Ham activities, especially now that I may soon be
among those that are partaking of the pleasures of retirement. Is your system presently
connected to an antenna? Do you get on much?
Back to work for now.......
Looking forward to hearing from the two of you gentlemen.
